THE SHORT ANSWER
E-commerce customer acquisition is the process of creating and capturing qualified demand that results in new customers at acceptable economics. Channel performance should be judged by customer and contribution outcomes, not traffic volume alone.
A channel mix covers different jobs
| Route | Useful role | Question to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Paid search | Capture expressed demand | Which queries produce new customers and contribution? |
| Paid social | Create and harvest demand through audiences and creative | Does the creative attract a suitable customer or only attention? |
| Organic search | Earn discovery for useful product and category information | Which pages assist evaluation as well as visits? |
| Marketplaces | Access demand and marketplace trust | What remains after fees, advertising, fulfilment and returns? |
| Affiliates and creators | Borrow relevant reach or authority | Are incentives and disclosure aligned with customer quality? |
| Referrals | Turn customer advocacy into introductions | Is the reward producing incremental, suitable customers? |
| CRM and reactivation | Reconnect with known prospects or inactive customers | Is this acquisition, retention or reactivation in your reporting? |
| Direct and brand demand | Capture customers already seeking the business | Which earlier activities helped create that demand? |
Traffic is an input; qualified demand is the aim
A visit is qualified when the customer's need, ability and timing plausibly match the offer. High click-through can coexist with weak product fit, low availability or price mismatch. Segment by query, creative promise, landing page, product and new-customer outcome before calling a channel efficient.
Read Search in the AI Era when product discovery depends on searchable category and product information. Search visibility is valuable only when the destination can help the person make the next decision.

Separate demand creation, capture and recovery
A creator may introduce a product, an organic result may answer a comparison question, a paid search click may capture the final branded query and email may recover an incomplete journey. Last-touch reporting can credit the final interaction while hiding the earlier work.
Use attribution reports as a model of assigned credit, not a direct observation of causality. When the investment is material, add controlled tests, geographic comparisons or other incrementality evidence where feasible.

Manage channels as a portfolio
- Define the channel's job and intended customer segment.
- Measure new-customer orders, contribution and payback alongside platform outcomes.
- Identify dependencies such as branded demand, promotional calendars and stock.
- Set a learning question before increasing spend.
- Protect a small test budget so the mix can adapt rather than merely repeat last month's allocation.
Connect acquisition to economics
Use How to Measure CAC in E-commerce to define the numerator, denominator and time window. The OpenSkool Acquisition Cost Calculator can calculate ratios once those assumptions are explicit.
