THE SHORT ANSWER
Begin with the domain knowledge and transferable skills you already use, identify an adjacent capability demanded by changing tasks, practise it through a real project and collect evidence of improvement. A focused bridge is usually more actionable than total reinvention.
Move one capability at a time
A marketer may add experimentation and AI-assisted analysis. An analyst may add decision communication and workflow automation. A manager may add agent oversight and process design. The existing domain remains part of the value.
Build an adjacent-skill bridge
- Name a changing task in your current or target role.
- List the knowledge and relationships you already bring.
- Choose one adjacent capability that improves the task.
- Build a small work sample using it.
- Seek feedback from someone who understands the outcome.
- Revise and document what you learned.
Use labour signals carefully
Job descriptions, practitioner conversations and project demand can reveal local skill needs. Regional job-posting studies are useful but miss informal work and may overrepresent digitally advertised roles. Treat a trend as a question to investigate, not an order to abandon your field.

Reskilling conditions are unequal
Time, equipment, language, employer support and access to meaningful practice shape who can adapt. OECD evidence treats training as a shared responsibility across workers, employers and policy—not a moral test imposed only on individuals.
A realistic plan protects a small recurring practice window and produces useful work before adding another course.
