THE SHORT ANSWER
Develop AI skills and human skills as complements. AI literacy helps you direct and evaluate systems; domain knowledge supplies context; judgment handles ambiguity and consequence; communication and execution turn analysis into coordinated action.
Technical versus soft is the wrong split
A technically impressive answer can fail because the objective was wrong. Strong communication cannot rescue an analysis nobody verified. Effective performance often requires AI capability + domain knowledge + human judgment + communication + execution.
Assign a purpose to each capability

Complementary skills matter because tasks are mixed
OECD evidence distinguishes advanced AI creation from the broader digital, analytical and managerial skills used across work. UNESCO's student framework similarly joins technical understanding with human agency, ethics and system design rather than treating tool operation as sufficient.
Strengthen the weakest link in a work sample
- Choose one completed piece of work.
- Mark where domain knowledge changed the answer.
- Mark where AI helped and where verification was needed.
- Ask whether the result was understood and used.
- Choose one weak capability to practise in the next version.
