THE SHORT ANSWER

Customer journey analytics examines sequences of interactions before and after an outcome to understand paths, friction and channel roles. It should preserve observation limits rather than compressing every person into one supposedly complete linear journey.

Map the observable journey

A customer may discover a need through social content, research through search, compare on a marketplace, return directly, respond to email and later purchase after an offline conversation. No single channel report necessarily observes or owns that sequence.

Separate touchpoint evidence from the customer's underlying motives. A sequence shows recorded interaction, not why the person preferred, delayed or rejected the offer.

Use paths, funnels and cohorts for different questions

Three analytical views
ViewBest questionMain limitation
PathWhich observed sequences occur around an event?Paths can become fragmented and hard to compare
FunnelWhere do people progress or stop in defined stages? The selected stages simplify reality
CohortHow does behaviour develop after a shared start?Maturity and selection must be comparable

Identity and privacy create gaps

Device changes, consent choices, browser limits, marketplaces, offline interactions and untagged links can break the record. Analytics products may model some missing outcomes under documented conditions, but a modeled event is still an estimate rather than an observed individual path.

Describe the observable scope and do not use invasive identity workarounds to create an illusion of completeness.

Ask what role each touchpoint may play

  1. Introduces the problem or category
  2. Supports research and comparison
  3. Builds trust or resolves an objection
  4. Captures active intent
  5. Completes a transaction
  6. Supports use, service or repeat behaviour
