THE SHORT ANSWER
Google Ads can capture explicit search and shopping intent as well as reach people across other Google inventory; Meta Ads often creates discovery through feeds and visual creative. Neither platform is universally better. Channel fit depends on demand, offer, creative, economics and evidence.
Start with demand context
| Question | Google emphasis | Meta emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Customer context | Searching, shopping or using Google properties | Discovering content in social feeds and placements |
| Primary input | Query, feed, goal and assets | Creative, audience signals, goal and offer |
| Creative burden | Strong relevance and feed or text assets | Sustained visual and message variation |
| Common role | Capture and expand demand | Create, shape and harvest demand |

Both systems automate consequential choices
Automated bidding, placement and audience expansion can find patterns that manual rules miss. They still optimize the conversion signals and values supplied to them. Poor event quality or distorted values can make efficient automation pursue the wrong outcome.
Feed clean business outcomes back where appropriate, keep exclusions and permissions deliberate, and monitor the distribution the aggregate result hides.
Do not compare platform columns as if they share one ledger
Each platform observes a different set of interactions and applies its own attribution settings. Comparing their reported conversions directly can double-count credit. Use a consistent analytics and business view, then retain platform reports for optimization within each system.
When the decision is large, add incremental evidence rather than arguing over which self-report is correct.

Choose with a testable channel thesis
- Customer situation: where is the need expressed or discovered?
- Offer: can the value be understood in that context?
- Creative: can the team produce the required volume and quality?
- Economics: what conversion and contribution make the channel viable?
- Measurement: which outcome and comparison will decide the test?
