THE SHORT ANSWER

Performance marketing is the practice of planning, buying, measuring and improving marketing against defined outcomes. It connects spend to demand, conversion, customer economics and business value rather than treating clicks, leads or platform ROAS as the final result.

A system from spend to business value

A performance team chooses an audience, message, channel, bid and destination, then observes what happens. The useful chain is SPEND → DEMAND → CONVERSION → CUSTOMER ECONOMICS → REVENUE → CONTRIBUTION. Each link can fail even when an upstream metric looks healthy.

A low cost per click may buy irrelevant visits. A low cost per lead may attract people who never qualify. A high return on ad spend may sit on low-margin products or customers who would have purchased anyway.

Measurement creates accountability, not certainty

Attribution reports assign credit according to a model and observable data. They help organize evidence but do not prove what would have happened without the advertising. Experiments, holdouts and matched comparisons can strengthen causal confidence when the decision warrants them.

Begin with one decision

  1. Name the business outcome and its time window.
  2. Define the conversion and its quality threshold.
  3. State the costs included in the economics.
  4. Choose the evidence that would change the budget decision.
  5. Assign an owner and review cadence.

Next, compare performance and brand marketing and map the economics of paid media.
