THE SHORT ANSWER
Generative Engine Optimization describes efforts to make information useful, retrievable and reference-worthy when generative systems compose answers. Exact selection methods differ and are usually proprietary. Durable GEO work improves access, clarity, evidence, authority, originality and maintenance while testing named experiences. It should complement SEO rather than become an attempt to game language models.
Separate documentation, observation and interpretation
| Level | Example | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Documented fact | A platform names a crawler or eligibility rule | Link the current official source |
| Observation | A source appears for a recorded prompt | Retain query, date, locale and interface |
| Interpretation | Clear passages may be easier to use accurately | State the reasoning and test it |
| OpenSkool perspective | Become reference-worthy, not merely extractable | Treat as an editorial objective |
Improve the source before chasing the response
A generative system may retrieve passages, rely on a partner index, use internal knowledge or combine several mechanisms. Because the exact path varies, focus on information that remains useful across systems: clear claims, evidence, distinctive contribution, accessible text, consistent identity and maintained facts.
Google currently says work described as AEO or GEO for its generative Search features remains SEO and requires no special AI markup. OpenAI separately documents crawler controls for ChatGPT discovery. Neither source reveals a universal generative ranking formula.

Retrievability is necessary in some systems and insufficient in all
A passage can be easy to extract and still be generic, wrong or unsupported. A site can be crawlable and never appear for a question. A source can be cited without driving a visit. Treat access, selection, presentation and outcome as separate stages.
- Do not promise a ranking inside an assistant.
- Do not infer a factor from a small prompt sample.
- Do not manufacture mentions or sources.
- Do not create near-duplicate pages for model variants.
- Do not confuse training access with live search retrieval.
Run GEO as disciplined discovery work
Choose important question families, document what each named interface currently presents, identify missing or misrepresented information, improve the underlying source and repeat the observation. Pair this with normal search and business measures.
